Employing 110,000 people on the five continents, Alcatel is a world leader
in the design, development and supply of telecommunications and cable
equipment, systems and services. Our extensive knowledge of these markets
and commitment to research and development coupled with our desire to
provide unequalled customer service enable the company to offer
state-of-the-art technology products and services, underscoring our
ambition to be a preferred supplier and world leader in all we do.
Introducing Alcatel in the USA
In the United States, Alcatel is active in both its Telecommunications and
Cables and Components sectors.
Telecommunications:
Active in more than 130 countries, Alcatel designs and markets complete
telecommunications systems around the world. Our activities cover fixed
public switching systems, transmission systems, access systems, mobile
communications, corporate networks, submarine cable systems, and the space
and defense systems.
In the United States, the world's most dynamic and innovative
telecommunications market, the Telecommunications Reform Act of 1996
opened the door to greater competition. The convergence of voice, data,
and video has created an increasingly large demand for multimedia products
and wavelength based services. Nowhere else has the Internet generated
such spectacular demand, creating a huge need for products that provide
fast, reliable access and infrastructure for the information superhighway.
Answering that demand, Alcatel USA, Inc. based in Richardson, Texas, is a
leader in voice, data, video and multimedia telecommunications products.
These include digital cross connects, access systems, fiber optic
transmission systems, optical networks, microwave radios, wireless
communications switches and network management systems. Our transport
products provide vital network infrastructure to all major long distance
carriers, to virtually every local telephone company in North America, and
to private networks, major corporations, government agencies, and
telecommunications systems throughout Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
At our facility in Ashburn, Virginia, we design and manufacture a full
range of high-speed packet, cell and frame transmission products,
including Frame Relay, X.25 and ATM for the data communications markets.
Alcatel is one of the world's largest data switching suppliers, with over
19 years of experience building sophisticated global solutions. We have
built more than 400 data networks worldwide, including 65 national
carriers, with more than 75,000 nodes in operation today.
Cables and Components:
Alcatel's Cables and Components sector, the worldwide leader in the field
of telecommunications and energy cables, has the industrial strength to
offer products and services that meet the growing needs of customers in
the infrastructure markets (telecom operators, power utilities, railway
and motorway companies), the industry markets (telecom equipment
manufacturers, car and aircraft equipment manufacturers, ship builders,
and oil companies), and construction markets (engineering, installation,
and distribution companies as well as large international companies).
Coupled with our batteries and component activities, this sector
represents a global market approach to supplying complete Alcatel
solutions to customers worldwide. The products range from the most
standard to the most specific for terrestrial and undersea applications.
The sector specializes in five areas:
Telecommunications cables, (optical fiber and copper cables), Power
cables (low, medium and high voltage cables), Batteries (for
cellular telephones, advanced industries, aeronautics, satellites and
electric vehicles). Metallurgy (transformation of copper and
aluminum into wire rod, conductors and enameled wire) Components
(hybrid circuits, electric motors, vacuum pumps, etc.
In the United States, Alcatel Telecommunications Cable (ATC),
headquartered in Claremont, North Carolina, manufactures a full line of
premium fiber optic cable products for both indoor and outdoor
environments. These include optical fiber, loose tube, central tube and
specialty cables, as well as riser and plenum-rated cables for outside
plant and building applications. Our customer base includes Regional Bell
Operating Companies (RBOCs), cable television multiple systems operators
and competitive access providers worldwide. ATC sells through
distributors, contractors and other Alcatel companies.
Also located in Claremont, North Carolina, our Optical Fiber Cable
Competence Center is a unique, world-class research and development
center, which supports Alcatel's fiber optic cable business worldwide and
drives technological progress and product innovation.
Research:
At Alcatel, we are taking technology into the new millennium. We are the
world leader in communications research. Our Research and Development
efforts cut across company lines, sharing resources and information among
our development and product groups throughout the world. In 1997, Alcatel
Alsthom invested roughly 9% of sales, in R&D. With over 1400 research
scientists at thirteen R&D centers in five countries in Europe and the
USA, Alcatel research focuses on software, energy, optical systems, radio
communications, network accesses, private networks and network
architectures.
Our Commitment to You
